Peter Hilditch, a long time supporter of HASAG, is in training for the biggest cycling challenge of his life when he takes part in the Prudential Ride 100 in London on Sunday 30th of July.

Following in the tracks of the world’s greatest cycling champions, such as Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome, Peter will be joining 25,000 fellow riders for a 100 mile cycle challenge that takes in the iconic sights of London as well as the stunning Surrey hills in a modified version of the London 2012 Olympic Road Race.

The legacy event starts at the Olympic Park and follows the original Olympic road race through London and the surrounding area, finishing on the Mall.

The Ride 100 can’t come soon enough for Peter as he’s waited a long time to participate in the event. He’s entered the ballot to secure a place every year since the race started and has failed to win a slot each time – until this year!

Speaking about the challenge Peter says: “I regularly cycle on Sunday mornings with four or five fellow ‘mamils’ (middle-aged men in lycra!) for a couple of hours. We usually do about 30 miles, so to contemplate doing a 100 miler is a big step up for me and quite a daunting prospect!”

To prepare for the event, Peter has been cycling to work every day, although because it’s only two miles to his office from home, he’s been doing extra training in the gym to ensure he’s in peak physical condition. Last weekend saw him step up his training with a 70 mile cycling event in Cardiff with friends – a good practice run for the Ride 100 at the end of the month.

I regularly cycle on Sunday mornings with four or five fellow ‘mamils’ (middle-aged men in lycra!) for a couple of hours. We usually do about 30 miles, so to contemplate doing a 100 miler is a big step up for me and quite a daunting prospect!

He adds: “I’m aiming to complete the race in about seven hours or less, if possible. It promises to be a great event as it’s got everything from leg-busting climbs to spectacular scenery and the amazing sights and sounds of London before crossing the finish line on the world famous Mall. What will keep me going is the fact that I’m raising money to support the fantastic work that HASAG does helping and supporting people who have been affected by asbestos and their loved ones.”

Peter has already raised over £500 for HASAG and is hoping to raise even more once he completes the challenge.
