If you have been diagnosed with an asbestos-related disease, you may be suffering from loss of earnings, incurring extra travel expenses or you may require care and assistance because of your illness. In order to help, you may be entitled to receive certain state benefits, even if you are retired.
If you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, you may be eligible to receive:
- Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit (IIDB)This can be claimed if exposure to asbestos occurred through employed work. We can provide you with the relevant form and can assist you with the application.
- Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and Attendance AllowancePIP is awarded with two components – mobility and living. PIP and Attendance Allowance are essentially the same benefit. PIP can be claimed if you are aged under 65 and require assistance with your personal care. If you are aged over 65 and need help with personal care, the benefit is called Attendance Allowance and that can be claimed instead.
- Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)ESA replaces Incapacity Benefit & Income Support, previously paid on incapacity grounds and is also available if you are in employment.
- Constant Attendance Allowance (CAA)You can claim Constant Attendance Allowance if you get Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit and you need daily care and attention because of a disability. How much you get depends on the extent of your disability and the amount of care you need.
- Blue BadgeBlue Badge parking permits enable disabled drivers and their passengers to park nearer to where they’re going. You may entitled to a Blue Badge and we can apply for this for you.
- Workers’ Compensation Act 1979This is a lump sum payment that you or your family may be entitled to if you already receive Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit. This applies if your illness was caused by your employment.
- 2008 Diffuse Mesothelioma PaymentYou can claim for this scheme if you came into contact with asbestos while you were self-employed or through a family member (washing work clothes etc.) It also applies if you don’t know how you came into contact with asbestos.
- Carer’s AllowanceIf someone helps look after you then once PIP or Attendance Allowance is received, your carer may also be entitled to Carer’s Allowance.
