The most common type of mesothelioma is pleural mesothelioma. This cancer develops in the lining of the lung and is strongly associated with being caused by exposure to asbestos. However, there are other types of mesothelioma which are also linked to exposure to asbestos.
Peritoneal Mesothelioma
Peritoneal mesothelioma is the cancer of the lining of the abdomen. Approximately 7-10% of mesotheliomas diagnosed are peritoneal mesotheliomas.
Exposure to asbestos is a recognised cause of peritoneal mesothelioma is exposure. However, there are considered to be other possible causes of peritoneal mesothelioma; such as mineral fibres, therapeutic radiation, chronic inflammation and familial genetic abnormalities. In addition, there are some cases the cause of the condition cannot be determined.
Therefore the link to asbestos for peritoneal mesothelioma is not as strong as compared with pleural mesothelioma. However, it is still possible to bring an asbestos related claim for the diagnosis of peritoneal mesothelioma. There have been recent case law developments in relation to peritoneal mesothelioma and exposure to asbestos dust. These recent cases provide useful guidance to how likely an asbestos related claim for peritoneal mesothelioma would be to succeed. Factors to consider in a claim would be, in particular, the level of exposure to asbestos a person suffered during their lifetime.
The Peritoneal Malignancy Institute at Basingstoke specialises in treating those diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelioma. They accept referrals for patients from across the UK. They hold specialised MDTs with an oncologist twice a month. Their aim to provide consistent and up to date evidence based recommendations for treatment and management plans for patients.
Testicular Mesothelioma
Another less common type of mesothelioma is testicular mesothelioma, which has the proper name of mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis testis. This mesothelioma is found in the lining of the testicle.
This is an incredibly rare form of mesothelioma. There are very few studies into the condition and the causes of the condition.
The assumption is that due to the strong link of asbestos exposure to the pleural and peritoneal mesotheliomas, that asbestos exposure is also a possible cause of testicular mesothelioma. There are other possible causes of testicular mesothelioma. These include chronic hydrocele, local trauma and irradiation.
Due to the very low numbers of people being diagnosed, it is very rare when it comes to bringing a legal claim for this condition. If you have been diagnosed with a form of mesothelioma then it is well worth contacting HASAG. They can assist you with investigating a possible link between your condition and exposure to asbestos, as well as considering whether you would be eligible for a legal claim.
