Action Mesothelioma Day

The Government is being called to mark Action Mesothelioma Day, by pledging funding for a national research centre into asbestos related diseases. At the moment, all the money going into mesothelioma research has to be raised by charities.

The Aims

• highlight the plight of those suffering from the disease
• remember those who have lost their lives to it
• make people aware of the dangers of asbestos exposure

Thousands have already lost their lives to mesothelioma, a cancer linked to asbestos exposure, and medical research predicts that as many as 50,000 people could be affected over the next 30 years.

Asbestos has many industrial applications, including power stations, shipping and dockyards, and railway works.

But it can take between 25-40 years for a person to develop an asbestos-related disease, such as mesothelioma, and the victim may become ill many years after the original exposure.
